Grooming

The Havachons have moderate grooming requirements. Their coats are medium-length, soft, and gorgeous, and to keep them that way they require 3 to 4 brushes (with a slicker brush and de-matter) every week. To avoid skin dryness or irritation the Cavachon dogs should be bathed with mild dog shampoo only as needed and not too often. Their ears and teeth should be cleaned weekly, and their nails clipped at least once every other month if they are not naturally run down.

Exercise Needs

The Havachons are small energetic dogs. They love to spend their energy by inviting their canine buddies for a chase and testing their speed. As a general rule, small active dogs like the Havachons aren’t built for endurance in heavy exercise. They generally prefer a few brisk runs and a long walk or two as opposed to miles and miles of trekking. Havachons will be at their happiest and in their best shape with 30 to 40 minutes of daily exercise that include walks and plenty of play indoors.  

Health

The Havachon is generally a very healthy breed that is unlikely to suffer from life-threatening health issues. Because they are a crossbreed of two healthy purebred dogs, they benefit from hybrid vigor and are less likely to develop any of the health conditions that are common in the Havanese and Bichon Frise breeds. Some of the issues they may encounter include joint problems that are common among all small dog breeds, allergies, eye problems, and dental issues.  

Lifespan

The average lifespan of a Havachon dog is between 12 and 15 years. Raising them in a loving environment and providing them with nourishing diets, plenty of exercise, and regular vet checkups can help them live long healthy lives. Both the Havanese and the Bichon Frise are known for their longevity. The oldest Havanese dog to have lived reached an age of 18.2 years, while the Bichon Frise has been known to reach as much as 21 years of age.  

Training

The Havachon is a smart student when it comes to learning basic and advanced dog tricks and commands. He has impressive skills and an eagerness to learn and please which makes training him an effortless task. Smart dogs are often bored easily, and in the Havachon dog’s case, this is an issue that can manifest as stubbornness. Thankfully, the Havachon is very fond of praise and treats, so his stubbornness is easily removed with proper motivation. It is important to identify what your Havachon puppy responds to best as a first step in training.  

Although this puppy breed is very friendly, it is beneficial to begin socialization training as soon as they arrive home. They should be introduced to family and friends gradually while indoors in a low-distraction area. Once your puppy is comfortable with casual interactions, you can move on to outdoor activities and interactions.  

Because Havachons are a very loyal and affectionate dog breed, it is likely that they might not respond well to being left alone. It is recommended to begin training them to be independent before leaving them alone for the first time. Separation anxiety can become an issue if these dogs are left alone without prior training.
